Dental X-rays
Dental X-rays Applecross
Dental X-rays are images of your teeth and other structures in the mouth that your Applecross dentist uses to assess your oral health.
These X-rays use low levels of radiation to take images of the insides of your teeth and gums. This can help your dentist to identify issues like cavities, tooth decay, and impacted teeth.
Dental X-rays may seem complicated, but they’re actually very common diagnostic tools that are just as important as your teeth cleanings.
What Dental X-rays Detect
X-rays help your Applecross dentist diagnose problems in your teeth and jaws.
In adults, X-rays determine:
- Decay, especially small areas of decay in between teeth.
- Decay beneath existing fillings.
- Jawbone loss.
- Changes in the bone or root canal because of infection.
- Condition and position of teeth to help prepare for dental implants, braces, dentures or other dental procedures.
- Abscesses.
- Cysts and some types of tumours.
In children, X-rays show:
- Development of decay
- If there is enough space in the mouth to fit all incoming teeth.
- Development of wisdom teeth
- Impacted teeth
How Does a Dental X-ray Work?
During a routine visit to your dentist, you will typically have X-rays done. These X-rays normally consist of two to four bitewing X-rays that can show your dentist more about the crown portions of your teeth and check for signs of decay. These X-rays are taken with a bite plate in between your teeth and the X-ray machine placed on either side of your face.
Panoramic X-rays are taken from the outside of your mouth and give your dentist an image of the entire oral cavity in one big photo. During a panoramic X-ray, the X-ray machine will move around the circumference of your head to get a full picture. This X-ray shows all your teeth, including the jaw bones and sinus areas and can be a great way to detect jaw disorders and any irregularities that you may have.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a dental X-ray?
Dental X-rays are diagnostic tools to help your dentist detect any damage or disease that is not visible to the naked eye. With dental X-rays, dentists can accurately diagnose and treat dental problems and be proactive rather than reactive to issues in the mouth.
How often should I have dental X-rays?
Unless you have had dental X-rays recently, our dental team will probably suggest having X-rays taken. This helps them evaluate the condition of your mouth and check for any hidden problems.
Afterwards, X-rays may be recommended every 6 to 24 months depending on each person, history of decay, age and mouth condition.
Are dental X-rays dangerous?
There is a minimal amount of radiation received from a dental X-ray. We get radiation from natural sources, such as soil minerals and our general environment.
With modern advances in dental technology, risks are kept as small as possible. However, your dental team will always take care to use X-rays only when they need to.
